Screwed Construction From a sustainable source FSC certified wood

This Tawny Owl nest box is designed to provide a safe, secure, and cozy space for these fascinating birds to nest. Tawny Owls, roughly the size of a Woodpigeon, have rounded bodies and heads, with a distinctive ring of dark feathers around their face framing their deep, dark eyes. While Tawny Owls are common breeders in England, Wales, and Scotland, they are not found in Ireland.

Handcrafted in the UK from FSC® certified redwood and featuring a recycled/farm waste roof covering, this nest box offers long-lasting protection against the elements. It is durable and low-maintenance when properly installed.

The nest box comes equipped with two heavy-duty side mounts for secure installation and an inspection hatch for easy monitoring and cleaning. Be sure to consult the included advice document for installation and maintenance guidance.

Designed with Tawny Owls' specific needs in mind, the interior is spacious and comfortable. Additionally, a camera clip is included near a small access hole at the back for cabling, perfect for those who want to monitor nesting activity.

Dimensions: 77cm (height) x 22cm (width) x 41cm (depth)
Weight: 9.2kg

Siting

The Tawny Owl box should be sited high on a mature tree between 3.5 and 5 metres with a clear flight path to the entrance. When the fledglings emerge, they use nearby branches to access higher areas of the tree canopy. Hence mounting the tawny owl box on an isolated pole is unsuitable.

The box should ideally face east/northeast or southeast. The availability of prey species close to the nesting box is vital. Tawny Owls eat a wide variety of prey, including mice, voles, rats, insects, invertebrates, amphibians and birds. The proximity of fruiting or nut-bearing trees and shrubs that support these target species would indicate a suitable nesting site.

Monitoring and inspection

Tawny owls are early breeding birds, and some individuals may lay eggs as early as January. You may inspect the box in May, but care should be taken opening the inspection hatch as tawny owls can be aggressive if young are present or nearby.
