Bats

Sadly, many species of bats worldwide are endangered or vulnerable due to factors including loss of habitat, low levels of food supply, destruction of their roosts, disease, hunting or the killing of bats.

The U.K. bat populations have declined consistently over the last hundred years. Bats are still under threat today from building and development work that affects their roots, the severing of their commuting routes by roads and wind turbines, cat attacks, flypaper and chemical treatments of some building materials.

So what can we do to help?

One of the simplest ways to help bats is to never disturb them. If a bat is disturbed during hibernation, it may rouse and become active. This increase in activity can lead to starvation if the bat’s fat reserves are used up before winter is over!

Put up a bat box or bat boxes. Create bat-friendly roosts!
