Common Swifts Apus frequently display a marked preference for accessing their nest cavities with a final upward swoop on the approach flight path. This is particularly true where telephone cables or the equivalent make a horizontal approach to the nest potentially hazardous. Similarly, they must drop down into flight when leaving the nest to gain flight speed rapidly.
Accordingly, the entrance aperture to this box is sited on the underside near the mounting wall to cater for these preferences. A small grip ladder ensures the birds find a good foot purchase when alighting.
The dimensions allow for the box to be sited under eaves or soffits on a wide range of roof designs and monitoring and cleaning access is achieved through a securely latched hinged panel in the front face.
Internally, a nest cup is included to further encourage swifts to site their nest at the end furthest from the entrance.
Shadow staining on the upper third of the grip ladder serves to display an apparent cavity to birds that are flying past the box at speed.
It is recommended that a number of boxes should be sited under different faces of a property since swifts tend to nest colonially and different individuals display varied preferences for approach flight paths and nest aspects.
In common with the rest of the NR range, the box carries a 20-year guarantee.
